Knee arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that allows orthopedic surgeons to examine and treat knee joint problems through small incisions, using a tiny camera (arthroscope). It is one of the most common orthopedic procedures worldwide.

Indications for knee arthroscopy

  • meniscus tears
  • ligament injuries (ACL, PCL, MCL, LCL)
  • cartilage damage
  • removal of loose bodies in the joint
  • synovial membrane disorders
  • chronic knee pain of unknown origin

How does knee arthroscopy work?

The surgeon makes 2–3 small incisions (about 5 mm each), inserts an arthroscope and miniature surgical instruments. The procedure usually takes 30 to 90 minutes under spinal or general anaesthesia.
